SOLD/ RABARI TRIBAL IDANI (head pad), Great Rann of Kutch, Gujarat, India

$65.00

Circa 1940s hand embroidered and stitched IDANI or head pad worn on the head by tribal Rabari women to carry water, firewood or other heavy objects. Beautifully embroidered in heavy buttonhole stitch in the typical Rabari style. The Idani is filled with densely packed straw, covered in coarse maroon cotton and is decorated with multi-coloured handmade camel hair pompoms, beading, white buttons, mirror work (shisha) with white rick-rack braid.

I purchased this idani from a third generation textile collector and trader in Bhuj, Gujarat, India during my visit in February 2012. A beautiful old collectable piece.
